Because of its fascinating size, the West Gate Shopping Centre can rightfully be called a shopping city. It is conveniently located at west outskirts of Zagreb, and is defined by a red-coloured steel tie, a symbol of design "à la Croate". West Gate is the biggest shopping mall in south-eastern Europe. Some 250 stores are arranged in the shopping area occupying the total of 98,000 square meters. Its interior is conceived as a triangular ring, the edges of which facilitate orientation, and are shaped as elliptical Plazas. Notable features of this centre are its 400 square-meter ice-skating rink, a bowling alley, and a children's playground occupying as many as 3,500 m2. A five-storey carpark, annexed to the mall offers, together with an open-air parking lot, more than 7,000 parking spaces.
The centre is formed of 14 wings, appropriately spread on two storeys. The structure is a combination of reinforced-concrete and steel. The reinforced-concrete structure is dominantly prefabricated, but is made monolithic on the spot. Steel girders are combined with monolithic reinforced-concrete slabs. Appropriate resistance to seismic action is achieved by means of monolithic staircase units, which also assume the function of evacuation routes.
